At White Rock

unnecessary detail perhaps?
At White Rock by Miss Aniela.
This was a portrait taken on the roof of a theatre (thanks to Darren R) on a drizzly day in Hastings. I wanted to capture a somewhat natural looking portrait - another 'weather' shot similar to what I captured in At Portland Bill Lighthouse, and to keep it natural looking throughout the processing.

This picture was published in Yo Dona magazine, which comes with the El Mundo in Spain. To see the article hot off the press - well, the scanner, thanks to Eva, (and to read the translation, also thanks to Eva) please see my blog.

Hi MA, very nice image. Love the red coat and your hands are wonderful.

Happy Birthday to your Grandad - I wish for you pleasant memories. I know how these losses produce empty places in our lives that are never quite filled again - memories and the good people around us help but...

Best Regards -M

Whilst most of your work is 100% perfect, I feel this one isnt. I'm not a fan of the curved corners, I don't think it adds anything to the shot.

I also think the background is too distracting, but your facial expression is still beautiful.

I hope you don't mind some criticism from time to time :)...your work doesn't usually need it.

As I said to Haggis, I've probably seen too many over-processed images recently, so I've become quite bored of them. I much prefer the style of this one and the previous "Life on the Downs". They might not be quite as "artistic", but they speak to me more. I'm not, of course, suggesting that you should only make "realist" images - you should do what fulfills your own creative urges - I'm just mentioning my own personal preference.
I like how this image seems to catch you in mid-thought. The fact that you're not looking at the camera is something I rather like. The way the figure divides the background is also quite clever. It's almost as if the road and the gardens are in separate locations. My first impression, however, was that you look GIGANTIC! The image reminds me strongly of Julia Fullerton-Batten's "Teenage Stories", in which girls stepped inside model villages. My favourite example can be seen at www.doobybrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08 /julia-fulle...
Your image is fine as the main pic in the Spanish magazine, and I'm probably going to add it to my favourites, but I reckon you'll be going on to make superior work when the sun finally comes out, as I think you have a gift for "action" shots.

A lovely shot.... Yes!
I know it takes some work (and imagination) to make something out of a drizzly day with a road in the background, but this works nicely! You do look, as Arty said "in mid-thought", or almost seeking a word with the Divine one:
- Please oh please let the exhibition opening go well...
- Happy memories to a dearly departed grandad...
- I hope I don't fall off this roof, please....

Congrats on the press in El Mundo/Yo Dona.
A tip o' the hat to Eva for translating it too.

The sky has an artificial gradient overlay to add a halo round the head, but I don't think it's too oppressive, unlike some of the vignetting on previous pieces. ;)

Thanks @ all!

i agree that this pic is more 'natural' (less processed) than my other pics and that was my intention. When i felt like I had gone too far photoshopping my face i reverted to the previous version, even to save the bits of smudged eyeliner!

thanks for all the wishes for my grandad.
Although I do slightly wish i didn't mention my grandad because it seems to link him to this picture, when he doesn't have anything to do with it, i just happened to upload it on his birthday - it's unintended and random.
@ william - I certainly was not thinking about him as i looked up into the sky (cringe!) sorry!

thanks @ all and glad you saw the El Pais article.
Although from what I hear (as i need a translation) their representation of me is also questionable. But interpretations say more about the writer than the subject.
