Halemaumau Vent at Dawn DDZ_0034
This glowing vent developed at the base of the east wall of Halemaumau Crater at the summit of Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii, in March 2008. When this photo was taken in May 2008, it continued to emit large amounts of sulfur dioxide and other volcanic gases, while the effusive eruption along Kilauea's East Rift Zone that began in 1983 continued unabated.
