Interesting. What are the results? Will the flash burn the diffuser when in contact?

I had an issue with Lumiquest Soft Screen with the D70s Flash getting in contact and made a little burnt mark on both Flash Cover and the Soft Screen.

Post more pictures. :)

I've been digital for a long time, so when I buy the film, how will I know if the cannister is black or white? Or can I buy an empty cannister?
Posted 22 months ago. ( permalink )

J.Chin Photography  Pro User  says:

@bechandra: from my film experience ... Kodak has black canisters, Fuji has these white translucent ones ... alternative, cut out from a gallon milk carton

All that remains says:

bechandra go to a film processing lab and ask for one from the waste bin its cheaper.

Great. I got a cheap hotshoe flash last week and wasn't overly happy with the first few results so I'll see how this goes.

I just cut it into a strip. Because it is naturally curved it just hugs onto the flash but I put a bit of tape on it anyway.

Flash Diffuser

Does the plastic need to be away raised from the actual flash? Because although this looks like it will work it would be better if I could just flatten it and tape it on permanently.

Great idea, cigarette rolling paper works well, self adhesive, takes up no space at all in your pocket or bag, and it's about 20p for 50 sheets.

I've worked at photo labs in the past and know that this is one of the oldest tricks in the book, only back then we would have to cut the canister and top in half and place it over the (external) flash unit.

Of course for the real deal, nothing beats a bounce flash.

Something else you can do with this setup is get a sample of gels from a lighting gel company like lee filters

www.leefilters.com/lighting/contact/

These gels fit nicely inside the film canister. Just open the "top" of the canister and slide the gel in. I recommend attaching a big metal loop to the gels like this one:
www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3421 &PRODID=...

to keep the gels managable, since the swatchbook has a small plastic pin holding them together, making them hard to manage.
