With great pleasure, we announce the
winning photograph and honorable
mentions in the 11th Annual National
Historic Landmark (NHL) Photo Contest.
This year’s record-breaking response to
the call for entries resulted in
astonishing images of NHLs from coast to
coast, including Alaska and Hawaii. The
pictures took us from battlefields to
mountaintops and celebrated the variety
of NHLs, including sea-going vessels of
various vintages, colorful interiors
from architectural treasures, and
historic structures framed by clouds,
sunlight and star-pricked night.

A schooner yacht and pilot boat, ADVENTURESS is a significant example of the "fisherman profile" design of the yachts of Bowdoin B. Crowninshield, a noted early 20th-century American naval architect whose work was influential in the development of American yachts and fishing schooners. Built (1913) for the purpose of private Arctic exploration and hunting, ADVENTURESS was acquired by the San Francisco Bar Pilots in 1914 and worked until 1952 as a pilot boat, guiding maritime traffic across the treacherous San Francisco Bar into the internationally important and busy port of San Francisco. Born in the first decade of the Cold War, the United States Air Force Academy provided the service with a steady supply of officers in a period of rapid expansion of the military's air arm. The Academy’s campus, by Skidmore Owings Merrill (SOM), ranks among the finest examples of modern movement architecture commissioned by federal agencies during the post World War II era. It was a controversial break with the traditional architecture of West Point and Annapolis, the military academies of the Army and Navy. The Chapel (pictured) is a focal point of the Cadet's campus. National Register says: Cincinnati Union Terminal (Ohio)
One of the last grand-scale railway terminals in the Art Deco style, it is also a masterpiece of planning by architect Paul Cret. In its heyday, 17,000 people and 216 trains passed through Cincinnati Union Terminal each day.

Construction of the canal in 1855 allowed exploitation of the resources of the Lake Superior area. It permits passage between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, and ranks with the Erie and the Illinois and Michigan canals as the most successful waterways constructed during the ante-bellum era.

President George Washington laid the cornerstone in 1793; the building was completed in 1865. With but one brief interruption, the Capitol has housed the legislative chambers of the U.S. Congress since 1800, and housed the U.S. Supreme Court from 1800 until 1935. Presidential inaugurations are traditionally held here, the physical symbol of the United States of America.

The largest building project of its day, the penitentiary drew thousands of visitors, many from abroad. As a result, it influenced the construction of over 250 prisons worldwide.

Early on the afternoon of November 30, 1864, Gen. John Bell Hood, against the advice of his staff, ordered his Army of Tennessee to attack Union forces under the command of Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield. Numerous assaults were made against the entrenched Federals; each assault was repulsed. The huge losses sustained by Hood's army helped doom his Tennessee campaign.

A vestige of an early 20th-century copper mining camp, Kennecott represents the mining techniques of the era. The mines here were among the nation's largest and contained the last of the great high-grade copper ore deposits of the American West. The world's first ammonia-leaching plant for extracting concentrations of ore from low-grade ores was designed and first successfully used on a commercial scale here. The camp is little changed since it closed in 1938.

National Register says: USS Texas, sole survivor of six American
"dreadnoughts," was built
between 1911 and 1912 by the Newport
News (Virginia) Shipbuilding and Dry
Dock Company. Texas participated in the
American landings at Vera Cruz, then
served during World War I as a member of
the Atlantic Fleet, hunting down German
warships. Between the two world wars,
Texas was the first battleship to launch
an aircraft from its decks. During World
War II, the ship led major troop convoys
across the Atlantic and bombarded enemy
shore positions during the invasions of
North Africa, Normandy (taking a
position off Omaha Beach) and southern
France. Late in 1944, Texas proceeded to
the Pacific, where it participated in
the bombardment of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Decommissioned in 1948 after a
distinguished career, Texas is now
moored as a museum vessel at San Jacinto
Battleground State Historic Site in
Texas.
