Super!!! I recognised this photo right away because I have a reference book with it on the cover. I always thought he was Australian, so it's jolly good to know I was right to think so. Good old Oz!!! :D

This picture was most recently published in Max Arthur's "Faces of World War I". There you can also find the myth that Kaiser Wilhelm put Barney Hines on his personal Most Wanted list, whatever that means.

Hello all, this particular WW1 photograph in sepia tones represents the common soldier in the field during a very conflicting war in Europe that basically ended monarchies and rewrote country boundary lines.
There were about 16 official photographers in Britain at the beginning of the WW1 who were assigned to the front to take documentary photographs. Back in those days, the war at the front was very controlled and news and photographs were censored heavily by the government and were most often taken for propaganda purposes.
It is interesting that now in the digital age, there is a movement to documnet and preserve these images as best as possible.
