With long exposure this could easily be an early paint-with-light experiment. That way the so called ghosts would be on the negative too.

If you read about the photographer on wiki you'll find out that all his photos are frauds. Those obvious fake ghosts were made with glass layers or something like that inside the camera.. can't recall the exact process though.

A penlight. You can do the same thing yourself. I use to take pictures like this all the time in a darkened room using the bulb setting on my camera and then have my daughter turn on a penlight and wave it around.

Double exposure was the trick these photographers used to create ghostly images. As photography by then was something fairly new and its process unknown for almost everybody, this tricks were easily believed to be true.

More recently a new much less shabby way of making ghost pictures is the use of very long exposures at night: you put the camera on a tripod and use bulb mode and a clock or a more sophisticated timer and use 5-10 minutes exposure shooting with ambient light in an empty room. If you (or somebody) walks into the camera field and stays there for a couple of minutes you will get a fantastic ghost !
