Lowestoft, Suffolk

seems a little dockedAdd your note here.
We compared this scan to the glass plate negative and can confirm that it has not been docked. If anything, the foreground is slightly darker than it should be. The photograph shows the early morning mist in the harbour at Lowestoft, hence the hazy background with the fishing trawlers
dutch herring lugger?

More potent than many paintings of this period. A shame that it's at such a small resolution.

Nineteenth century photographic plates, whether they were 'wet' or 'dry', responded differently to spectrums of light visible to the naked eye. Late 19th century 'film' was orthochromatic - it was mostly sensitive to blue-green light, and this may well be the reason why old pics look quite misty - films sensitive to a full spectrum of colour ('panchromatic') didn't come into use until the 1930's, but they seemed to render haze and mist differently. You may have taken pictures on black and white film using filters to cut through environmental haze: this is just like that.

The herring fishing season started in the Northern Scotish islands traveling down the East coast finishing in Lowestoft. The fisher girls would follow the fleet down to do the guting and filleting. Now ther are very few fishing boats out of Lowestoft.

This is the harbour in my home town. The famous writer, Joseph Conrad first set foot in England at this harbour in 1878. At that time, he reputedly only spoke six words of English but went on to become one of the finest writers in the English language.
