My great uncle said to me , when the fleet went out you couldn't see the sea for the masts and sail cloth. Now I understand.

Brilliant. So how did these work? Were there pedals inside, or did some poor sod have to drag them out to the sea?

Hi,

Bathing machines were conveyed to and from the sea in a variety of ways. The majority of bathing machines were pulled by a horse or pair of horses under the control of a driver. However machines could also be conveyed by human power. Some machines, like those at Folkestone, were raised and lowered by means of cables, which stretched down the beach to the sea, along rails.

Scarborough, pictured here, is believed to have been the first place to include bathing machines. A similar image of Scarborough, which seems to show horses pulling the bathing machines to the surf, is ‘Bathing Machines at the Seaside’, c. 1905 from the Science and Society Picture Library.

Just to set the cat amongst the pigeons: the London Midland and Scottish Railway can't have been the 'maker' of this pic: the LMS wasn't incorporated as a company until the 'Grouping' (under the Railway Nationalisation Act) of the old Victorian railway companies in 1924.

The maker of the pic could have been one of the many jobbing photographers hired by the railway companies of the day to promote the seaside and it's attractions. People like Francis Frith and A.L. Henderson roamed around the countryside making the first picture postcard images.

Scarborough in 1897 was served by the Great Northern Railway, part of the London and North Eastern Railway after 1924.

Hi jon pratty,

Thanks for your comment. Interestingly we've received a comment card in the physical exhibition saying the same thing. We've updated the maker and we're checking to see if we can put a more certain attribution on this photograph.

What a charming Victorian picture.
Although I had to ask myself, 'what on earth is a bathing machine?' So in my search I found some enlightenment and a few smiles here... mhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathing_machine
