Is brighter than on black. But the text looses too much on the top, too much of a gradient over there. If you could reduce it there, that would work I guess.

i like the white background better as well. maybe rather than white->black try using colors from the gift but with gradient (e.g. tag color to dark red). if the text is too similar in color then it will become too subtle though.
