Acrylic CD holder hold my millions of colors of dry erase markers, bone folder, scissors, letter-opener, white-out, pens, pencils and Sharpies. I also have the whiteboard cleaning solution and eraser in here.
new 20" iMac + wireless peripherals (how I hate inedible spaghetti!)
Fake orchid, the only kind of clutter I can accept. There's no way I could get 5 blooms on a real Phalaenopsis anyway.
Address labels
Ruler, 3-hole punch, stapler/staples
Stamps are inside w/checks
Persian rug coaster and page-up paper-holder-thingy.
Tabs + business cards.
Flags + more tape.
Binder clips, rubber bands and various other holder-togethers.
Composition book for old-fashioned notes and journaling.
4x6 post-its for my favorite method of note taking from reading books. I hate writing in books, so I stick these to pages and write my notes and favorite quotes, and then I can keep them in the book or stick them all over my whiteboard while I write papers.
Keep your friends close, and your backups a bit further away.
A small electrical fire would be likely to burn both your computer and your backups. Having the backups in another room, or even in another side of this room would be a huge improvement. The place where you keep important papers (contacts, insurance papers and so on) is a very good place to store them, as in case of a fire/flood/panic you can just take that one box and run.
Good backup advice! I've had good experience with using online backups of the most important stuff via Mozy (mozy.com). Easy, free for up to 2GB, pretty cheap after that -- never have to think about it until you need it.
I've been crawling through Unclutterer.com's archives for a few weeks now, and this is one of my favorite submissions. 1) I'm a student, so I love seeing inspiring student set-ups. 2) Your desk and the surrounding workspace are lovely. 3) I love the idea of using giant post-it notes for taking notes in books! That's fabulous! I'm definitely trying that out next semester. :)
