Natalie, we have a grave in similar condition to this in an abandoned cemetery that we keep up on our farm. It seems the fashion was to build the above ground box, but the body is still buried six feet under. I don't know why, but I would be curious why this became fashionable at a certain period of history. I've seen other above-ground-empty crypts in other old cemeteries.
Vandals probably caused the damage in your picture. In the old cemetery we take care of, the wood casket below eventually decayed as did the body, causing a "cave in" at the grave, and the stone crypt or box on top collapsed and broke when the ground underneath it decayed and caved in.
Still spooky, if you ask me.

Penny is correct; these never held bodies.
