Comet Lovejoy

    ISS030-E-017836 (27 Dec. 2011) --- Almost a week after first sighting in the night sky, Comet Lovejoy is visible to the six astronauts and cosmonauts currently aboard the International Space Station. An 85-mm focal length was used to record the image.

      Beautiful image! Love the color tones. Nice rendition of the comet. It also seems that a we are seeing ice flakes in the foreground. At first glance the white specks appeared to be stars, but they extend well below the planet's limb.

      Wonderful, but I, too am confused by the "stars" below the horizon. I don't think they're ice but could it either be a double exposure or, more likely, caused by a star tracking device onboard to counter the movement of the ISS in orbit?

      It's definitely stars below the "horizon" (they check out on astronomy.net) but I don't believe now it's really the horizon but through the atmosphere.
