DIY mosquito trap - steps 4 and 5

Fit the top part of the bottle snugly into the bottom part.
Make it a tight fit so that the CO2 that's produced will only be coming out of the hole in the middle.
Cover with black paper to make it dark inside - just how mosquitos like it.
Ideally you want to place it in a dark, preferrably humid corner of a room.
After two weeks you should have a whole bunch of (mostly) dead mosquitos in your trap.

Replace sugar water and yeast every 2 weeks. Try it and let me know how you get on.

I have seen this on the TV news in Taiwan as well and it does seem to work very well.

And perfect for a school project. I might even try it. I get at least one bite a day from mozzies that make it into the house - those little b*stards are going to pay!!!

So, I've built something like this and it does not seem to work for mosquitos found in the US. I was a little suspicious about the statements that moquitos like corners and damp dark areas, neither of those statements are true. I think this is for a completely different insect, I've been to the schools project pages and most of the images show something other than moquitos

The bugs you can see on the school website are likely caddisflies. Apparently the CO2, or perhaps the sugar, attracts other bugs as well.

And the statement that mosquitos like corners, especially dark, damp ones is certainly true for the species that are found in Taiwan.

but I have a question, the C02 is not good for humans either, is it safe to put this artifact in a room being humans present?

Naruwan says:

@bendernos12 Yes, it's safe. It produces a very small amount of CO2. It's probably a similar amount to the CO2 in the bubbles of a bottle of carbonated soda, for example.

I assume they find their way in but most do not find their way out again. They eventually fall into the sugar/yeast solution and die. That's my best guess!
