Veiled woman in front of a door in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania

    Newer Older

Back from a 3 weeks trip in Tanzania. I didn't do safari as 99% of the people that i met there! I traveled along the swahili coast, and in Zanzibar and Pemba islands.
It was not very easy to takes pictures, and i had very different welcomes in villages, from hostile to friendly, with lot of variations around "money!". The country is really beautiful and there are many things to see, from german times to slavery trade, and muslim culture.
On this picture, a very famous omani style door in front of Tipu house, i had the chance to go inside, more pictures to come.
Those old houses, according to what i understood are managed by governement, and 3 or 4 families can live inside. The magnificent door hide a very poor condition for the people living there.

I was there two years ago and had exactly the same problems with the locals being either friendly or hostile and asking for money! Despite that it is a visually stunning place to visit.

yes it is, but hearing Money before Jambo is sometimes boring!
I think the fact that huge Costa boats with hundreds of passengers desembarking in Stone Town has changed the foreigners vision that local people had...

You can't really blame them for asking for money can you?? The amount of aid and volunteer "mzungus" that are there "giving" create the perception that we are there to give away money! That is what they associate white people with-but we get mad when they ask us. It's like here, take this for free and i'll pay for your school and new shoes for everyone.. but don't ask me for anything!! It is tough but you have to think why.. and we have created it. I have a hard time with it also..don't get me wrong. There is just no simple answer..

Yeah, the doors in Stone Town are all unique - each has it's own number and is being checked upon by a special commision from time to time (or so I was told).

BTW I've spent three months in Tanzania and nobody has ever harassed me for money.

These are such beautiful buildings, but not easy to maintain or keep the mosquitoes out. Zanzibar built some modern blocks of flats for the people, but they are certainly not enough for all the Zanzibar town people. So you get many people living in simple houses with mud-plastered walls. Take you pick!

Well done having the courage to confront people & take their photos!
