Callosity
The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is one of the most endangered marine mammals in U.S. waters. Researchers estimate that there are approximately 450 animals remaining in the population. Florida takes a special interest in right whales because their only known calving area is located off the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. FWC researchers participate in conservation efforts such as responding to strandings and entanglements, reducing vessel-whale collisions, and conducting aerial surveys to evaluate right whale populations and winter presence.
