The current incarnation of the Cookbook interface. We're still tweaking little details, but this is definitely the direction it's going in!

I can't even believe how many iterations you went through, and each one looks great. This one is totally killer though, those "accent lights" are brilliant. Great overall feel and tone. Amazing.

Love it... Definitively the best of the lot, and probably one of the best UIs I've seen... The only thing I'm not quite sure about is the scrollbars... Not quite sure what it is — the light arrows, the wooden slider... Something just doesn't feel right there...

But overall... Great work!

While I really like the idea of the changeable themes and the theme we see above, are you guys also planning on having a configuration flag for people who just want to force a consistent aqua interface?

Why not include skins? So you could have different styles depending on what kind of food you're cooking?

I like it, but I think the lights (the should look like stylish halogen spot lights) are to much.

My favorites are the mock-ups Discoriffic! and Black toolbar.

I love the look you're going for, including the little lights on the left side and the heavy wood grain accents. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of this, as Macgourmet just isn't cutting it for me.

its so refreshing to see this level of detail going into the UI of an apple app. Reminds me of the amount of detail that Mike put into the delicious app

It is original, but isn't this a bit like brushed metal, except wood?

I think that hiding the planner button in the titlebar isn't such a good idea. Unless specifically told to do so, a normal user wouldn't know that the "planner" itself is the toolbar.

the wood in the sidebar looks really fake. it's just wavy lines. there isn't any grain etc...

also i think that an option for a normal unified or smooth metal window should be in there somewhere. this app is just too visually contrasting and bright for normal usage. the reason there is a guideline to interfaces for os x is because every app would be all different colored and textured and it would look horrendous.

is there a way in it where you can track the nutrition of the food? link it to something that gives you maybe a read out on a spreadsheet of protein, etc...?
would be nice so people could use it like fitday and minimize programs and be more efficient and healthy

p.s. sorry if this is the wrong place to post this comment, i just saw this on digg and it looks cool!

It looks great! I'm very excited about this, but I see a problem with the amount of room that is left for text directions in the recipe box. I want to have this running on the laptop in the kitchen while I am cooking. If there is only space for 4-6 steps in the recipe I will have to scroll down to see the rest and I don't want to touch the laptop with gross food covered fingers.

to be honest, i think this goes beyond "fun" and into the realm of "kitsch" - it's a bit too much IMO. the lights, the wavy woodgrain, all the over-modeling, the grass ... it's all a bit overwhelming.

I think the one titled "black toolbar" is the best overall package.

looks nice enough, but it is really overkill. i can't imagine really wanting to change themes for all of my recipes. seems like that would be tedious. if you do decide to go in this direction, something like "black toolbar" should be the default. it has a universal feel that would work for anything.

Quite nice, but how about introducing it as one of many skins, and allow users the option of switching between them? I do like this, but would much prefer a simpler, brighter theme.

Also, would it be possible to view recipes in different formats (say, as icons like in the finder, or just text links)? If I were to have very many recipes under one category, I imagine the single-column view won't be very user-friendly...

I concur. If its going to be non-standard, could there at least be an option to make the top and bottom look, well, normal?

I like flickr.com/photos/mydreamapp/445750007/in/set -72157600046...? better because the left panes are much easier to read there. Too dark in this version.

i agree with devNevyn: the first wood mockup is the best design. i'm all for innovation, but if something has to be functional, familiar elements go a long way toward a better user experience.

very nice

maybe I will remove the "spotlight".

--
about theme and interface,; you can break from "aqua", but your widgets, textbox and menu has to be _EXACTLY_ functional as standard widgets (shorcuts, services, context menu, _all_ )

christhomson  Pro User  says:

Hey,

I Love the new design, maybe this could be a possible OS X theme in the future :P

The Spotlight window sticks out a little too much, and the image seems a little too perfected (in the way the image (of food)) is too much on a grid.

Anyway, Great work !!

Do you think it would be easier to design if there was a real recipe in there instead of lorem ipsum and a copy of the same ingredient list that doesn't even include fish?

Why does everyone think that the Japanese letters and grass are permanant. They're Part of the RECIPIE card. You won't be seeing the letters and grass when you click on something like "Cocktails". I LOVE this UI. Keep it JUST the way it is. Period.

Are you planning to have default "recipe backdrops" (the chopsticks etc) for some basic food tags? Otherwise it'll look a bit bland for people's personal recipes by contrast. Also, I like the lights, but possibly make them recessed and more diffuse?

I'd like to see the three control buttons at the top left of the window (do those have an overall name?) slightly inset, like the look of brushed metal and to a lesser extent plain cocoa apps.

Otherwise, it looks brilliant to me, though i will push for that search input to be at the top right.

Can you just get on to fixing the basic UI and do the app? All these mockups of fancy GUIs seems a bit of a waste of time to me.

The slider and those top buttons doesn't look like their placement is very well thought out.

With 10.5 now becoming ui consistent, what is this going to do to CookBook? Will the app ignore 10.5 and be wooden?

verycarla says:

I've got to say, I'm not in love with the accent lights. They're "cute" but I don't want "cute". Will they be optional, at least? And I like the wood idea, but I'd just as soon have it be Unified with theming options available if the mood strikes me. (Which, I confess, it most likely WILL NOT, but then I'm getting to be an old coot, so pay me no mind! ;)

What I'd LOVE to see is a shot of the recipe ENTRY process. Thus far all you've shown us is what it looks like when we're looking up recipes. The entry process is what can ruin an otherwise excellent cookbook app.
