Royal Albatross

Royal Albatross by Natmandu.
This fine specimen was out to sea near Taiaroa Head, outside Dunedin. Difficult to estimate from a distance, but his wing span was at least six feet.

Probably more than six feet. Saw a model of one today, actual size. Wing span HUGE!

Also learned that 100,000 a year are dying after being caught on longline fishing hooks. 19 of the 21 species of albatross are threatened with extinction because they can't breed fast enough to make up the numbers. Seewww.savethealbatross.net/. It's very sad - they're such magnificent birds.
