blue+green porgy story

Tomato Shade for Mr. Porgy!
(subtle & nicely placed) ;)
blue+green porgy story by mwhammer.
for SLW: hopefully i have found a way to make fish look good. i think the jury is still out.... to add, i cannot decide which of these two (see following for second) images makes for a better diptych, and want to leave it to you to determine. thanks for your ideas.

Wow, what a lovely dyptych! I love the idea of the paper background for the fish and the scene on the right set up where the rough cut fabric creates the connection to the pic on the left. Also the way how the green fabric drapped increases the rustic feeling of the entire set up.

I definitely love your style!

wow, this is beautiful!! I love how the potatoes are laid out on the image on the right and how that one tomato slice is covering the fishes eye (was that done purposely btw?)

brilliant
the fish looks wonderful in the before and the after
I like the way the raw fish appears to be refusing to look at the cooked image

That blue fish shot is fabulous! I wrote my reasons for liking the other dip better on that page, but I do think this is wonderful.

This is really tough. I like both your color ideas for the left, maybe with a slight preference for the monochrome for the reasons pointed out. I like many things about the right including the tones and the fact that you did make whole fish look good - I like your strategic placement of the tomatoes! The right feels a touch crowded to me - I wish there were a little more breathing room, maybe by deleting a thing or two such as that form in the upper right. I like the left hand image on a stand-alone basis - and he's pretty cute - in fact smiling and winking I think. But not sure about it married with the right, mainly because the horizontal orientation is sending my eye left and I'm wanting it to either travel up and down, or right, into the next image. Wonder if you tried orienting him vertically, shot and cropped a little differently? Curious about your thoughts and wonder if anyone else has a similar observation about the orientation?

Like Sabra I think that the left photo is fantastic stand-alone photo. In a diptych like this it is maybe too strong, because it is almost a portrait. The eye is a great dominating and anchor point in this photo. And with its golden color a perfect color contrast to blue. The very clear shapes and forms are in contrast to the right photo here. And due to this the right one appears to be crowded as Sabra mentioned it.
I like two elements here very much. The blue-green background contrast of the left and right photo. And I agee to here, that the paper and the fabric in both photos are taking almost the same area and placing is a great idea.

I really appreciate your feedback. This was tough for me, because I really like this left image. I agree that the other image likely makes a better diptych, as it feels more balanced left to right. And I'm sorry to say that these were each shot for their own benefit--not with a diptych in mind--as I have been too occupied to sit down and plan a shoot with the deliberateness diptych ideas require. I hope to do so, and thank you for the feedback so far!

Fish are not easy, that's for sure. Especially whole fish! Give me a dessert to shoot any day, but.... :)
You're right, the left is very much a portrait! And yes, I can see how the right is too busy as a result. Stand alone, maybe not, but in comparison, likely.
Thank you for remarking that you think I made the fish look good! I still think I need to work on it, but I like the raw ones most. Yes, those tomatoes were indeed strategic... as I told Thorsten, since these were initially intended as stand-alone images, I did not consider the crowding until I attempted to pair them. It's always something. :) I shot another of the whole fish on the blue, but it is a horizontal view. I wanted the portrait idea--on its face--so I decided not to go for the vertical shot as you mentioned. Thanks much for your feedback.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with the other, and for your appreciation to the blue one here! I'm glad you can see why I had difficulty.
Thanks to you both, I heartily appreciate your applause.
Great! Glad it is satisfying for you. :)
I had not thought about that, nice new perspective you've offered. I love reading your comments, as always.
Yes, it was purposeful. Thanks for noticing the food arrangements; I wanted it to be casual and believable, but attractive and colorful. mmm, tasty potato salad!
Thanks so much for your compliments. I too liked how the white forms echoed from one image to the next, and though they were shot on their own as single images, I thought that could bring them together, along with the colors, in a fun and successful way.
Thank you everyone!

hello there! I hope it's not too late to give my two cents. your photos are gorgeous as usual. as a diptych, I prefer the other one in the series more for the same reasons given by Thorsten and Sabra - the fish and the dish on the right are about the same scale and both subjects are similarly cut off on the right of the frames which puts them a bit off balance imho. As individual shots, they are superb and mouth-watering. I really love the raw fish shot on the left. it has a lot of character and the blue tones give it a nice seaside feel.

I much prefer this to the monochrome.
The beautiful marine blue background does a perfect job of bringing the ocean along with that glisteningly fresh-looking fishy.

Great colours.

I prefer this one. Just one part of the fish showing with the blue background looks better than 3. The prepared plate's perspective is also better.

I think you need to connect the two better, like have the cooked side of the fish be the tail end or vice versa, the left is miles ahead of the right, hope it works out.
