Hey, wait a second! You used a polarizer on this!

Be that as it may, this is gorgeous. Great timing, getting that gull in the shot.

I used the polarizer the whole trip if shooting in the day. The sky was so boring the whole time.

But I'm still sceptical about CP's with wide angle lenses. It just makes the scene look a litte too fancy.

The polarizer does make the scene a little surreal in due to the intensity of the blue sky and reduction of glare in the water. But I don't think the "fanciness" detracts from your image.

What polarizer do you use?

Mono Lake always looks a little surreal. Those tufas are just too other-wordly. This is a great shot.

@cranky: I'm not a fan. I dropped it and it fell apart. It still falls apart from time to time and requires reassembly. If I were more of a polarizer user I'd get something better. But this is fine considering I bring it out of the bag every 6 months if that.

If you do go, make sure to take a side trip up to Bodie State Park. It's about 30-45 minutes away and well worth the side trip. If you like ghost towns. And you do.

I was in downtown LA on Sunday, and lived there, so yes, I like ghost towns. Yeah, thanks... never heard of it... I went to Silver Lake then south to Bristlecone State Park, so missed Mono Lake. Tioga pass is the way to go there (from here), so only while it is open, and not make it through Tahoe. Though tempting.

Beautiful colors. It's just too bad you didn't get a more interesting sky.

Yeah. Funny, there was still snow on the ground in shady north facing areas from a storm that moved through just before we got there. In landscape shooting, timing is everything.

2¢ on polarizers: I agree that sometimes the effect can be goofy, but other times it can be just right, as when it helps reduce the contrast between sky and ground, or takes the glare off a building's windows. It's also nearly essential if you find yourself shooting in the otherwise unshootable light of mid-day summer sun — at least, it makes things look interesting. It's definitely the one filter I recommend to beginners, though getting them to understand how to use it is another thing.

Can you call it a seagull when it's over a lake? I think it's a lake gull. Shame it's not over a bay and then it would be a bagel.

Mark Twain wrote about the seagulls at Mono Lake in his book Roughing It.

He was as perplexed by the seagulls at Mono Lake as we are.
