The photographs from the Notman Photographics Archives are a priceless testimony to the history of Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries, from its people to its landscapes...

William Notman (1826-1891), his sons, and the photographic studio he founded in Montreal, documented Canadian life and her people from 1856 to 1936. As Montreal was the commercial capital of Canada for most of the lifetime of the studio, he was ideally located to record the vitality of the new land.

In 1956 the historic section of the William Notman & Son studio was bought by McGill University and housed in the McCord Museum of Canadian History, forming the Notman Photographic Archives. Since then the works of many other photographers, both professional and amateur, have been added to the collection that now includes over one million images with a range of dates from 1841 to the present day, illustrating Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia and the North.

William Notman (1826-1891), ses fils et le studio de photographie qu’il a fondé à Montréal ont documenté d’une manière saisissante la vie au Canada de 1856 à 1936. Capitale commerciale du Canada durant presque toute l’existence du studio, Montréal représentait pour Notman l’endroit idéal pour attester de la vitalité de la nouvelle nation.

En 1956, l’Université McGill se portait acquéreur du volet historique des photographies du studio William Notman & Son, corpus qui forme les Archives photographiques Notman qu’abrite le Musée McCord d’histoire canadienne. Depuis lors, des oeuvres de nombreux autres photographes professionnels et amateurs se sont ajoutées à la collection qui regroupe aujourd’hui plus d’un million d’images datant de 1841 à nos jours, illustrant le Canada de Terre-Neuve à la Colombie-Britannique, en passant par le Grand Nord.
