Luxury or Nurture?

Luxury or Nurture? by mtsofan.
Day two-two-two/365. I remember making an appointment with the vice president of the college I attended. The topic was the music program. Though I cannot recall the exact reason for our desire to challenge him, the statement he uttered during our meeting is clear in my memory. He had made a decision based on his opinion that music is a "luxury" when it comes to an academic curriculum.

In this photo, a teacher, hired specifically to give our pre-school children early experience in music, explains how a drum works. Why, for example, it's useful to have air beneath the head.

Within a half-hour session, the kids also sang, used hand movements, learned dynamics (loud and soft voices), and even used body movement.

Studies have shown that music and dancing can enhance a person's performance in math. From my perspective, it can help people to think more creatively.

Is music really a luxury?

No way! Sheesh, music is so basic to our needs. I can't imagine a school without music. What a sad place it would be.

Okay, the more I think about this, the madder I am getting. All those people who have their iPods permanently attached to their ears are most certainly NOT listening to math problems!!!!

I think that if more of our young children were exposed to music the world would be a better place. (I wish it was mandatory for kids to learn to play an insturment in middle school.) It is definitely NOT a luxury! There are many inner city music programs now that have proven the value of music and the positive effects it has on our young kids.

Not sure if it is factual or what the commercial is about, but right now there is a commercial airing on one of the local radio programs stating that if you study or play an instrument in college, the percentage that graduate is higher.

research - www.childtrendsdatabank.org/indicators/36Scho olArts.cfm

basically state that highschool students that are involved in performing arts are more like (percentage wise) to graduate from college. 40% to 23%. Big difference.

Hmm. That is, indeed, interesting, and would confirm what I'd expect. The article starts out by saying that causation is complex. I'd wonder about that. Does participation in the arts help to assure that one will succeed and graduate, or are kids who are otherwise cut out to succeed and graduate also more naturally inclined toward the arts? I'd like to think it's the former.

Participation in arts and music may also be linked to parental encouragement as well as opportunity so I would agree with the caution about interpreting cause and effect from statistics.

To succeed in the arts takes practice, which may help develop good studing practices, may be that one goes with the other.

Interesting comments. As someone involved in music in school, I would agree that it is very important. But so it art and other "non-academic" things. I think it is all about choices for kids and a well-rounded curriculum!

Every society has music - all different - for me its part of what makes us human, part of our 'voice'.

When my daughter was born she was really sick. I mean in intensive care, humidicrib scarily sick. Her breathing was unstable, she had meconium in her lungs, she couldn't regulate her temperature and she had some sort of blood infection they couldn't idenitfy. There was a song I had always sung to her before she was born, I heard some theory that you should sing to them prenatally and then they would recognise the song and your voice afterwards.

I sat there, stunned, by her crib for hours, not even crying - I was too far in shock and fear to do anything. Then it occured to me to sing, so I began to sing our song, Run Rabbit, Run Rabbit . . .The nurse looked up as the monitor beeped and Jo's breathing stabilised. She said to me to keep on singing. I did. Jo came off the oxygen the next day and out of intensive care the day after that. The Paediatrician came in and said he didnt' know what I did but what ever it was it worked. I told him I just sang to her.

I dare that college VP to tell me music is a LUXURY!!!!
