Robe or Disrobe?

My wife, Janice, wore a choir robe yesterday, for the first time in years. She and I were helping the church choir to present a Christmas cantata.

And, that brings up a question. Choir robes are very traditional. So are robes for clergy. Borrowed from theater, they are meant to present uniformity, and to cover the signs of one's own uniqueness, in order to focus more on God.

But, are robes out-dated? Some feel that people who are uninitiated to the church may find them strange and unfamiliar. In fact, since robes can be found on academic graduates, and judges, and virtually no one else in our culture, they may even present a barrier to worship.

What do you think? Should choirs wear robes, or should they wear identical shirts, or black and white dress clothing, which would be more familiar today? Should clergy robe, or should they aim for an appearance more like their congregation?

What Happened Here?

It looks like a cat came from the upper right corner and feasted on a less fortunate animal. Best viewed large, and without glare on your screen (as there presently is on mine!).
