Personally I think Microsoft is and always will be a step behind (if not a few steps behind). The Yahoo acquisition is a strategic move to increase their overall size in the online ad market.... but they aren't coming up with anything new. Advertising to customers on their home computers is old hat... it's so, 2008. Companies have to think AHEAD in order to win.

Mobile Internet is where everything is heading. Mobile, mobile, mobile. Google is bidding for the 700 MHz spectrum in order to advertise on cell phones and portable devices. This type of advertising is both behavioral based as well as LOCATION based! Google understands that the way people access the Internet is changing.... and what better way to advertise than 'in the moment'... and in the specific location of that moment.

Google is looking to the future (behavioral location based marketing on a spectrum that they own the rights to) and Microsoft is looking to make redundancies in their web presence (ie, Hotmail vs. Yahoo Mail.... maps.live.com vs. maps.yahoo.com.... etc.etc. etc.) in order to increase their overall size in a quickly aging market setting.

To make a comparison.... if this was 1908 instead of 2008.... Microsoft and Yahoo would be still laying railroad lines, while Google is busy paving and creating roads for them new automobiles.

Other than that I have no strong feelings about Microsoft & Yahoo.
hahahahahaha

I see there is still the logo that says 'flickr LOVES YOU'. This is very comforting. I had started to think that maybe flickr didn't love me anymore :-(

I wouldn't care so much if it didn't involve Flickr. The problem we face is that there is no other place like Flickr. Yeah, there are photo sharing sites, but none like Flickr. We have awesome groups, and a wonderful community of friends. sigh.

I don't know what will happen. I know there was talk about Yahoo splitting off Flickr, but in reality that won't happen.

Great post and commentary Michael.....and I really hope you are wrong about that "screenshot" - ugh.

I think I spoke too soon when I said there is no place like Flickr. I think I found what looks like a viable alternative if the time comes where we all need a new place

www.ipernity.com

Now, about the chatter about Google or Apple buying Flickr, hmm, now if they bought Ipernity instead!!

Debbie: I don;t think I could get used to the name ipernity...or zooomr for that matter! sheesh! they'd better not mess stuff up...

Hey, Michael, you have the same initials as Microsoft! Eeeek!

.debbie T says:

Yeah, the name ipernity is a mouthful, I can never remember it!

I tried Zooomr, but the groups are not the same, and I am pretty sure that is the site that I received two spam messages in my account mail, there really doesn't seem to be any privacy settings.

Ipernity is pretty much a flickr clone. that is why I like it so much.

I figure by the time MS does anything crazy, there will be a ton of new sites opening up...at least that is my hope

I notice that there is a link in the MSN search box at the top of the page that says 'Save Flickr'......Perhaps Microsoft should pay more attention to what it promotes online.. ;)

Microsoft: "Hi, Yahoo, I'm Steve... Balmer! Yes, Balmer... Okay, anyways, I sent you this here offer of take ov- I mean, offer of purchase of your company. Does you agree to the terms?" Balmer lifts his hand to his mouth as Dr. Evil does and raises an eyebrow.

Yahoo: "Steve, we don't-"

Microsoft: "That's Dr. Evil to you!!"

Yahoo: {Pausing a moment to collect from the interruption} "Okay, Dr. Evil." {Yahoo execs glance at each other}"we don't think your offer is sufficient to reflect the fiscal and financial value of our company."

Microsoft: {Jumping up on the boardroom table like a chimp}"Okay... So, is that a yes? I usually know a yes when I hear one! "

Yahoo: {Execs glance confusedly at each other} "It's a no. D- ah, Dr. Evil."

Microsoft: "Okay, let's take a 10 month recess and take another stab at it, shall we? You guys are just off the plane and you're feeling a little jet lag. Here, let me hook you up with my assistant and he will help you out."

Yahoo: "Steve- I mean, Dr. Evil, there's nothing further to discuss."

Microsoft: "So, you've made up your mind? It's a yes? Oh, please tell me it's true!!"

Yahoo: "This is going to be a long day..."
