Fruit Fly

    Newer Older

My admiration of zxgirl's insect photos shot up a couple of hundred percent today when I, now equipped with some of the same equipment she has, tried to take some fruit fly shots. This is the best of about 20.

Because I live in a Medfly quarantine area, I thought the clouds of fruit flies invading my house were the sterile flies released to prevent reproduction of the intruders. But then I looked up what the medflies looked like and they don't look anything like this. I guess I just have a lot of "regular" fruit flies moving inside as the weather gets cold outside.

Edit 12/13/09: In the harsh light of day I realize the previous process of this picture was too dark, so I replaced it with something brighter.

I'd never seen a fruit fly
till my wife threw a watermelon at me
Not bad atall for a supplementary lens!

Great shot, and I'm glad I inspired you! And I'll tell you that I also take many bad blurry photos for each one clear shot that you see me post. ;-) It's the nature of the beast and not using a tripod. The DoF is so shallow with macro - your breathe and heartbeat will put the subject out of focus!

It's cool to see that she's actually eating the fruit - I can see her distended mouth parts.
