John R. Armsrong

John was born abt. 1818 and died after 1887.

I was sent this photo and was told it is John R. Armstrong my 4th great grandfather.

I found the following information but still am not sure if this is the correct relative. I wonder if it is not one of his sons. If this is him, I would think this was taken during the Mexican War as he looks to young to be in the Civil War.

The Civil War Armstrong Muster Roll (#8)

John R. Armstrong, Company: F Unit: 5 Tn. Cav Rank: Major Alleg. Union

5'8" tall, black hair, dark eyes, dark complexion, married, farmer.

He was also in the Texas Rangers along with his father, Elijah and brothers Barton and James. His father was of Scottish ancestry.

My John was an interesting fellow.

From a great aunts notes, mixed with other notes and information he may have had a few wives. I know he had a least two -- Bathsheba Potter and Susan Elizabeth Potts Sherrill. According to a great aunts notes he was also married to Mary Rowe a Cherokee woman who died in childbirth and Suzanna Lindsay who died childless. If he was married to Mary Rowe, I was told William Eldridge was the surviving child. There is much speculation about this. Many believe Bathsheba to be the mother.

Born in Tennessee his father Elijah moved the family to Missouri, Daviess County. From there the family moved to Oklahoma and Texas.

I do have a copy of his marriage certificate to Bathsheba Potter thanks to Terry Armstrong.

John's brother Barton was registed Cherokee Indian. His grandmother Ruth Templeton was also Cherokee. His mother Margaret Peggy Higgins was Chickasaw.
