End

    Newer Older

The end of Enterprise Drive in Newark. If I busted through the fence and drove a short distance, I would end up in the Bay.

I was bored and home alone on a Friday night with all of my friends having stuff to do. I decided to try some night photography, something I haven't done much of with my 5D.

I pulled up Google Maps and tried to find somewhere that might be interesting. I considered a few places, but decided Mowry Avenue in Newark would get me close to the bay, which could lead to some interesting pictures.

When I got to the end of Mowry, I was a bit disappointed; it's right next to some salt ponds but you can't see them from the road. I stopped by some train tracks thinking I might get some pictures, but I left after taking one picture because it was dark, I was alone, and I was in an exposed area with trees around me.

I drove around a little bit, not knowing where I was going, and I ended up on Enterprise Drive. I drove to the end, and felt a bit more comfortable here; it was a little bit better lit but more importantly I was surrounded on three sides by fences, making me feel less exposed. (It's still an odd feeling to be in an area like this with no one else around, taking pictures.)

That's the biggest problem I have with nighttime photography. If I'm by myself (which I usually am when I'm out taking photos), I definitely feel exposed and a bit unsafe--especially when paying more attention to the viewfinder of my camera than to my surroundings.

I like the story, and really like this series, and love (especially lately) trips out on the town just to shoot photos - it's so fulfilling, isn't it? I guess you already knew that, but I'm just learning.

Digital Trav, we should have a flickr night photography meetup--safety in numbers. Though for some reason I just got the image of Tobias and the Queen Mary dancers.

presta, I agree 100%. It sort of forces you took look at the world from a different perspective, finding interest in things that you normally wouldn't notice. Though of course you have the whole New York City exploration thing going for you too. :)

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe we can set it up in the San Jose group for when the evenings are a bit warmer. But I don't know that we'll have as much success with the "street toughs" as Tobias. ;)

On a tangent, too bad that Arrested Development was cancelled because it is such a great show.

I don't mind Arrested Development tangents. :) Last I heard, the show wasn't officially cancelled. I like the desperation references they're making now. :)

To continue the tangent.... I read that one of the Fox executives recently talked to reporters about their plans for the rest of the season and he described the final episode as the "season finale" not the "series finale" but when asked about it said he did not expect the show to return next season. Perhaps after famously cancelling two shows (Family Guy and Futurama) that went on to do much better in syndication and on DVD, no one at Fox wants to be the person responsible for the third strike.
