Bay Bridge Cantilever ArchesThe actual spot where the bridge collapsed in 1989. Driving over this segment is always a bit of a grim reminder of what danger is possible.
The arches of the cantilevered section (the eastern expanse) of the Bay Bridge. Traffic heading from Oakland to San Francisco uses the top of the bridge--all the better to see the San Francisco skyline as you approach. Those going to Oakland are driving on the lower level. Since they have not built the new eastern expanse yet (which will have side-by-side traffic), it is a little bit scary to drive on the bottom section.
