Tuesday, February seventh. From up the hill in Mejtaš looking southeast out across the river valley. I don't know what the yellow building is--apartments, I assume--but the spiked wall with all the surveillance cameras to the right used to be the German Embassy.

Tuesday, February seventh. The trash collectors can't get to the dumpsters. To the left and right of this photo, the street is an unplowed kilometer-long slope. At this time, the only way to get here was on foot. And many of the garbage dumps around town are even worse. I chose this one because you could actually see the cans. Because this whole mess was not hidden behind an impassable ten-foot drift. One shift of the wind could bring a thousand pounds of snow down from the eaves above, too, and bury this mess until spring.

Tuesday, February seventh. The view up the road through Mejtaš. It's going to be a while before anybody can more those cars.

Tuesday, February seventh. The state of the snow in Sarajevo's Baščaršija and Stari Grad neighborhoods. Snow on the tree that grows in the old caravan stop Morića Han. Han means "inn" but this is a true caravansaraj, as you can see from the ancient courtyard here, which is cobbled with round pink (and slick as heck) river rocks. In the past camels and wagons would park here, and travelers would sleep in the upstairs rooms. Now there is a restaurant and an excellent carpet store.
