Close Encounters - White Pocket

Close Encounters - White Pocket

Check this out Large

Another photography adventure in the books. This has to be one of the craziest trips yet. I made this whirlwind trip with my good friend and talented shooter John W. We had no idea what we were in for once we left on our trip. Our planned trip was was to hit the painted desert of Paria then head over to White Pocket.

To make a really long story short, and if I ever run into you guys while I'm out shooting and want the full details of the story just ask, but our trip was cut short due to rain, snow, high winds, coyotes howling in the night, cold weather, wet clothes, blizzard like conditions, driving in white out conditions, wet socks, wet gloves, wet beanie, and a blown away tent. It was a crazy 24 hrs. The conditions went from not too bad to horrible within hours.

If you ever get the opportunity to photograph White Pocket, it will make your head spin. Its literally sensory overload! The possibilities are endless there. It is like no other place I have photographed. The lines, striations, textures, colors, and formations are out of this world. It's very alien like. It's so hard to believe stuff like this exists.

Hope everyone has a great week, happy shooting. Peace and Love!

Bubbles and Cracks

Bubbles and Cracks

Definitely check this out Large...........I uploaded a 1200 pixel version so you can see all the crisp detail.

I normally don't post 2 images in one week, but I was getting comments saying that they would have like to have seen my previous image with all the ice cracks and patterns as an abstract. So here it is. This image is a five image focus blend for depth of field. I can only imagine this printed as a 30x40 or larger with all the detail here. Hope you guys enjoy this image. Happy shooting this weekend, looks like the conditions may be good around here in the SW. Peace!

Slip and Slide

Slip and Slide

Might want to see this one LARGE!

Slipping and sliding is what it took to get this image. I had 6 falls, about 5 close calls, got a sprained thumb from one of the six falls, a wind burnt face from the 30mph freezing cold winds and one frozen foot to get this shot. It was worth it and would do it again. Hope everyone is have a great week, looks like the snow is finally coming, and I guess it will be a while before we see frozen lakes again. Thanks for the visit.

Reflections

Reflections

Check this out Large!

I was finally back to Mono Lake for my second visit. The first visit here with the bootcamp crew wasn't so pleasant. Hwy 120 was closed due to snow. We attempted try to hike to the lake through 3 feet of snow, and that was a complete disaster as well, so coming back to this location for another try was very exciting to me. The excitement was sucked completely out of me when I saw that there where crystal clear blue skies when I arrived. At one point this guy comes up to me about an hour before sunset and said "wow look at this light, it gets no better than this." I'm not sure what light this guy was seeing, but believe me the light was not great, especially at the time that he was talking about. I was somewhat discouraged, but when I arrived I saw reflections of the tufas everywhere. I figured I'd concentrate on the reflections than photograph this wide view with an uninteresting sky. I walked around over an hour to see if I could see a comp that I would like to possibly shoot once the sun fell behind the mountains. Although there were clear blue skies, I knew that there would be some type of afterglow towards the east and if I stuck around I may be able to make something happen. The water was completely still, the reflections were like glass. It was somewhat eerie to see the water so still. Sure enough the afterglow came. I wasn't expecting the glow to be this intense. The glow on the horizon was incredible. When I took my first shot, I couldn't believe how clean the raw file was. I didn't use any filters at all. No CPL no grad....nothing. One exposure.

Hope you guys enjoy the image, have a great week, and happy shooting.

And I have to thank my buddy Jean Day for encouraging me to post this image, because if it weren't for her, this may have been sitting for a while in the hard drive. Thanks buddy!

The End

The End

My last sunset of the year. I rarely use the word epic, but this evening, the light was EPIC! The light was going off in all directions! It was crazy! I was literally pounding myself in the head because the light was going off like crazy. On a scale of one to ten..........the light was an eleven! Seriously. The light lasted a good 25 minuets and when I left, the color was still going off. Wow! Hope you enjoy the image, there will be more images to come from this location in the future. Hope everyone's New Year is off to a great start. Peace.
