Collision 1.

debris from the car's number plate cover.
Collision 1. by mr walker.
Full sized image.

I was walking around the corner from George Street, west onto King Street, and I glanced at the traffic just in time to see this car rear-end the cyclist, who had stopped behind a taxi. There was a big screech of brakes, suggesting that speed was an issue in the collision.

The cyclist asked the driver for his details, blocking the lane with his bike, since it seemed like the car might not wait - he later implied that the collision was deliberate, due to an earlier exchange. The driver certainly wasn't cooperating.

The driver was angry, saying to me that the cyclist shouldn't even be on the road, that "all bikes should get off the roads and make room for the cars." I told him that wasn't the issue, since bikes were legally allowed on the roads and he'd just hit one. I didn't get a chance to tell him that it's cars that cause traffic jams - just saying bikes are okay annoyed him so much that he took off, mounting the curb with one wheel to get around the taxi ahead. He sped around the corner, south down George Street.

The friendly bus driver in the background offered to act as a witness, as well as me. I hope they get this guy. It's drivers like him who should be taken off the roads, not cyclists.

This is appalling. Such road rage. Good on you for documenting it.

Check this out, which happened recently in Toronto.

You've got his license plate, too. You did your good deed for the day. And thankfully the cyclist didn't look injured.

Let's just hope the police care.

You could, of course, offer your shots to a local newspaper.

thanks all. this is one reason i always carry a camera. i'm still a little disappointed that i did't get a clearer shot of his face, though. live and learn. he was quite aware that i was taking photos, so it can only be the fog of anger that made him act as he did. a few hundred dollars of repairs versus possible criminal driving charges - which would you choose?

the citynoise link isn't responding right now, wing, shall try agin later.

hero? shucks! just trying to make myself useful. but thanks anyway :-)

let's hope the police care? good point. i still haven't heard from them. might go in and make my own complaint if i don't hear something soon. (the cyclist has this page's url, so the photos are his.)

the local newspaper idea ain't such a bad one. not amazing photos, but an important issue at the moment, esp given the attitude of the driver.

Yeah that's a hot link right now. Lots of people checking it out. Have patience with that one, it will eventually start to come down. It's well worth it.

If you don't mind, I'd like to blog this along with the toronto one. Care to make a set for the little series?

The guilty often lash out at those they offend. I hope that your on-the-spot support means that this guilty guy will have to explain his behaviour in court very soon. I hope too that the bicycle guy was able to get back to his work safely and without too much hardship.. Good on you Mr Walker.

well done walker! i was a cycle courier once and the same thing happened to me, in the rain, by a taxi. if anyone out there is prepared to potentially kill someone because of their own neurotic annoyance, take away their car keys for good!

blog away! that toronto thing was pretty full-on, eh? she was lucky, he seems a scary psycho. i was once beaten pretty badly by a road-rager, who turned out to be wanted for armed robbery! of course, it was my assault that got him arrested for the more serious crime ... so i'm stuffed if i know what the moral is, there ...

I'm the bloke on the bike.... Police tracked the driver down, who called me and offered to buy me a tyre (are you kidding??) - so now in the hands of the driver's insurers, though the driver continues to delay submitting his claim, so the insurer can't get started till they do (i'm still waiting six weeks later).

The guy cut across 4 lanes and in front of a taxi to 'line me up' and ram me on purpose - finally i understand the meaning of ''issues''....

hi sancho, thanks for dropping by. great name, you can call me don ;-)

i confess, i didn't get around to the police report - too busy/lazy/blahblahblah until it seemed too late. but i will, if you want (or need help with the insurance claim). it was pretty much an assault, after all.

Oh this is great! I mean, not great that the cyclist got hit, but it's great that you were there to get these photos. I hope the driver got to see what it was like on the inside of a jail cell. What ever did happen, by the way?
