Jefferson Davis Memorial: Richmond, Virginia

Jefferson Davis is buried under his statue in Hollywood Cemetery. The James River is to left in this photograph as Mr. Davis faces east. Immediately to the left (south) is the grave of Virginia Governor (40th), and Confederate Major General (Cavalry) Fitzhugh Lee. The grave of the daughter of Jefferson & Varina Davis-Margaret Howell Davis Hayes (February 25, 1855 - July 18, 1908) and her husband J. Addison Hayes is on the left shadowed by the Angel of Mercy. The front of the statue reads:

At rest.

An American soldier, and defender of the Constitution.

Born in Christian Co. Kentucky June 3, 1808.

Died at New Orleans Louisiana Dec. 6. 1889.

West Point Class 1828.

Member of House of Representatives from Mississippi, 1845-1846.

Col. 1st Missi. Rifles Mexican War 1846-1847.

Brigadier Genl. U. S. Army May 17, 1847.

U. S. Senate 1847-1851.

Secretary of War 1853-1857.

U. S. Senate 1857-1861.

 

Jefferson Davis was first laid to rest at the Tomb of the Army of Northern Virginia. In 1893 Mrs. Varina Davis had his remains moved to Hollywood Cemetery.

 

On October 17, 1978 the United States Senate passed Joint Resolution 16. This Congressional Act restored the citizenship of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. It was signed by President Jimmy Carter as he referred to it as the last act of reconciliation in the Civil War. The resolution was sponsored by Senator Mark O. Hatfield (Oregon) and cosponsored by Senator Orrin G. Hatch (Utah) and Senator Strom Thurmond. It is Public Law 95-466 effective December 25, 1968.
