ESCAPADE |
ESCAPADE is the first ever cross-art
improvisation festival to take place in
London, held by movingartsbase in
November 2006. Supported by Awards for
All, London Metropolitan University and
Islington Council, ESCAPADE united
communities. Bringing some of the finest
teachers and performers in the field of
improvisation, the local community and
emerging improvisation artists all under
one roof. These photographs are the
result of three exciting nights of
performances crossing theatre, dance,
voice and martial arts.
Julia Burstein is trained as a graphic
designer before taking up photography.
Her dance photography evolves from both
her practice as a photographer and a
dancer. Being a contact improvisation
dancer helped her develop an
understanding of dance and performance.
Her aim in creating still images is to
convey to the viewer not just the
physical aspect of the performance, but
the experience as a whole, comprised of
all senses. Dance is not just about
movement, it is about space and air, the
air between the dancers, the distance
between different parts of the body, the
energy that is created and flows on the
stage. Dance is about touch, the touch
of skin to skin, of skin to floor. Dance
is about connections, affiliations and
emotions.
“my photography is about witnessing the
moment, translating and capturing the
essence of a transitory creation”
