On top of the Shawangunk Ridge, some of the best technical rock climbing in the world with over 5 miles of cliff face open to the public and thousands of trad routes. In the background is the Catskill Mountains, part of the New York State Forest Preserve.
There are various ways to get to the tops of the cliffs. Non technical hikes, 5th class rock climbs, and semi technical scrambles. We didn't climb a 5th class route to get to the top, rather a short but fun 3rd class scramble. There are dozens of scrambles like this in the Gunks to get to the top of top rope setups or as descent routes, but few are this clean and enjoyable.
