National Geographic Daily Dozen September 2008 Week 1

This is the high-resolution C-41 color negative barrel scan. Here's a shot of the gear I used. If I recall correctly, I used Kodak Royal Gold ASA 100 speed film. I was stationed on the USS Columbus SSN 762 Submarine in Pearl Harbor, HI in the mid-90’s. While on a Pacific-Rim deployment, we stopped into Yokosuka Japan for some minor up-keep work and one day on liberty I went into Akihabara (Electronics District near Tokyo). I purchased a Sea & Sea 35mm underwater camera, 20mm wide-angle conversion lens, base-stay, arms, and two strobes. I never had much time to dive in Hawaii, but I managed to catch this shot while on a boat dive off the west coast of Oahu, Makaha Caverns. I remember the videographer “Mel” telling us that we should see a 3-flippered green sea turtle called “Tri-Pod” and he warned the females with long hair to tuck their hair into their wetsuits since Tripod liked hair ;-) Tripod had a 6-pack plastic cola keeper around one of her flippers which cut off the circulation and killed that flipper. The dive was a shallow dive at roughly 40ft max. I was tracking Tripod with my gear by swimming back to the ocean floor and recall getting about 6 shots off…all the while trying to get the suns reflection behind her head.

This shot was inspired by a poster of a Green Sea Turtle called Nugget photographed by Dave Schrichte who shot for an organization called Friends of Hanauma Bay a group dedicated to preserving Hanauma Bay.

Beautiful photo of a wonderful animal. Her story should set off an alarm in many that the sea is not our trash can. The small Pepsi can or baggie to toxic waste kills the sea and the animals and plants that call it home.
