Night sky

Night sky by mothernature.
It is a beautiful clear sky tonight and a nearly full moon, I was trying to get some shots of the moon but couldn't seem to manage it very well without burning out the moon. I have a lot to learn about night photography. Here, if you look closely you will see that there is movement in the stars. Taken at 13 secs. I am not sure if the cause of the star trails is exposure time or possible movement of the camera on my very cheap tripod. Anyone know how long of an exposure will it take to show some star movement?

basilly Yes, Sally, the stars are gorgeous tonight. Amazing how bright they are even with such a bright moon, that is what is lighting the sky to contrast with the trees.

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought you forgot to take the lenscap off, but this is actually really cool.

I know I've done some stuff here in AK where we've gone for five minutes and longer to create star trails. The only problem I could see would be light pollution being overexposed in the photo. Can't wait to see what you come up with :)

LOL, thanks to you all that did bother to click on the thumbnail, you are right it does sure look like a black square! I think the only way I would click on it would be to find out what my crazy friend was doing posting a black square!

Anyway, thanks for the comments, I know it isn't a very good photo, but truly this is how it looks to the unaided eye once your eyes adjust to the darkness in my backyard at night, at least with a pretty full moon. There are actually moon shadows from the trees, and I have been able to read in the moonlight in the past it is so bright.

Dave, I live so far out light pollution isn't an issue, really. Only a a little bit in my southern sky at the horizon from a very small town 10 miles away spoils the view. But in all other directions, it is good.

I thought it was a black square too, Susan, and am glad I clicked on it....you did have me intrigued for a moment, thought maybe you were going for some new minimalist look.

The shot came out nicely. I admire your attempting to shoot the night sky. Something I have been contemplating myself and am trying to figure out how to shoot it also through a telescope. But I need to first learn how to use the telescope, lol...might be awhile...

Interesting discussion in the link you provided, Susan. The one time I tried an image with stars showing, a shorter exposure than yours, I thought I saw subtle earth movement. Now I need to check it in terms of my tripod, as I was using my lightweight one. Either way, I like your eye in terms of seeing those stars through the web of the tree branches; nice frame.

Nice shot. I don't know what length of exposure to start a star trail but here is what 30 sec exposure does to stars (Northern Lights shot)

atcbugman Thanks, and your photo is case in point that 13 secs isn't enough to show star trails. It will depend somewhat on the focal length. I have always noticed in aurora photos that the stars are so bright and beautiful, as with your image.

Star light star bright,
The first star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.

Very pretty, Susan! The lacy trees add lots of intrigue!

very intriguing, like a velvet cut-out. I have not yet taken the time to practice with my tripod. You entice me to do that.

I do not think that you could see the movement of my valentine unless I put it in your comments. so here it is..
