52 Weeks 2011 - Week 15 - Theme: Purple or Pink

I was running out of time and ideas to cover a theme for this week. I had about 20 minutes before we had to leave and I didn't want to miss this week. I grabbed a rectangular clear glass vase filled with water, put a white paper on the wall about 18-20" behind the vase. Set SB-600 @ 1/16th power on the background. Set SB-800 @ 1/128th power with a tiny Lumiquest softbox on camera left (lower flash power gives you richer colors). Mixed some paint with water and filled a small syringe without needle. Squirted some paint into the water and hit the shutter. Adjusted curves, levels and saturation in post processing and rotated image 180 degrees.

After each attempt I had to replace water in the vase, I left my camera on manual focus and traced a contour around base of the vase on a piece of scrap paper. That way I could set the vase in exact same spot time after time. Vase glass turned out to be somewhat of a low quality and I didn't get paint "clouds" sharp enough.
