The LIDO

The LIDO by tilo driessen.
a store that has been almost closed for many years, yet still displaying dry goods for those peeking in through the small slit of window not newspapered.

until recently, the store's display was in plain sight of the passers-by but a story in a local paper may have brought unwanted attention. behind the windowcovering, though, the lights are still on.

seems there has been some internet traffic on this: www.discovervancouver.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=29738

m. says he used to shop there in the seventies (starving student days) for bargain price foods about to expire.

other m. says in the nineties the store was only open on saturdays. she loves the store with its rows of vintage yellow brand canned peas, and is saddened by the loss of view into it.

in bittersweet justice, newspapers now obscure the very thing they thought to drag from obscurity.

the lido always confused me it was never open, but everytime i walked past it the light was on.

the dry goods have been there long enough that the boxes were fading.

i thought of it as a weird art installation

I really like this shot of the Lido and am now committed to discover it behind my own lens vs. just driving by!
The way you have captured it is so fitting, the slanted horizon and the blus hue really adds to this image! :)

thanks, photocat62.

in hindsight, the courier piece is a regrettable piece of having gone too far. i wish they hadn't done this.

a tag search on flickr for "the lido" and vancouver yields two dozen images, amongst them photocat62's excellent pictures.

A strange thing about The Lido was that the calendar on the wall was always on the correct month despite the fact that the shop seemed mummified.

Ah, The Lido. I was sad to see it papered up -- like another little piece of East Van had died. I hear that some Vancouver band wrote a song about it?

Just heard on CBC yesterday (July 9, 2008) that they cleaned out The Lido. The woman who owned it and lived upstairs passed away. They found a bunch of very old food stock, kitchen stuff, packages of green velour pants from the early 70s, $400,000 in cash upstairs in a closet, and 12 $100 bills from the early 1900s tucked under the rug, perfectly preserved. Cheers, Carmen.
