Survival

I would like to have a print with this aspect on my wall!!
Survival by More Altitude.
The tenacity of life in the harshest of environments never ceases to amaze me. How does this tree, and it really was a lone tree stuck out in the middle of the sands, manage to find enough water to live? Just incredible.

Please view more photos and stories on my website.

Tizirzak, Aïr Mountains, Northern Niger. December 2005.

Very nice capture! I like its color composition . . . and yeah, standing green at such harsh desert, what we might learn of it. :)

Thanks for all your comments and encouragement folks- I'm glad you like. I like the little critter-tracks in the fore myself, a reminder that there's all sorts of life out there, however unlikely.

@ Mark Griffith: I have no idea, but it's almost certainly under 100mm, and quite probably under 50mm per year. The whole region is dry as a dust-bowl. As pictures can tell a story, so too they can be deceiving. This tree is actually a couple of miles from the Tizirzak oasis. There's not a drop of surface water, but there is a dry river-bed, and that means there's pockets of water sitting beneath the sand somewhere. Trees find them, as do wells. Tuareg nomads regularly pass through and camp at Tizirzak to water their goats and camels, and it's where we spent the night. The water table is not particularly deep there, and presumably this tree has tapped into one such little pocket of water, even though it's well outside the oasis itself, and been able to flourish.

I can't find words to describe how I like this picture. It is fantastic from the technical point of view, it is wonderful as a landscape, but beyond all this, it has such an elemental feel to it about nature and life itself.
A truly wonderful picture.

I wonder how it even starts growing? During a rainstorm? In a few days? I guess... Once its big like this, I guess its roots go deep and have access to deep underground water sources...
