Fractal Oscillator

Fractal Oscillator by moonbear3325.
Here's a Yamaha PSS-6, circuit-bent, and with my magnetic patch bay added on the rear panel. The idea goes back to when I used magnets to hold a wire in place, bridging the 2 body contacts on my first bent synth (the Odor Box, c. 1967) so I could adjust the other controls (freeing my hands from the contacts). This patch system opens up lots of great alternatives for signal routing and mixing...

Hi Good Doctor,

I gave this away right after I built it (it was the grand prize at a springtine festival I sponsor). I didn't have time to record it! But the new owner has sent me some files - I'll see if I can get some posted over at anti-theory.com.

At the festival we had a nice jam with this. Juan Matos Capote, my student and fine experimental artist, played the Fractal Oscillator while I played a bass udu (headless ceramic drum). We were joined by others at the festival on their unusual instruments, but the Fractal Oscillator was the heart of it all. Tribal. Alien. Fantastic.

Juan used the bay to change the direction of the bent passages while the tempo remained the same (quarter-note backbone - easy to follow on hand drum).

The new owner, however, has managed to get evolving chance songs out of it with just a single tap to the chance trigger (Request PB).

These songs contain odd sonic subliminals lurking beneath the music (similar to the output of my Sub-Chant Generator, a stereo human voice synth whose bending allows bits to "float" -not tied to either hi or lo- resulting in this strange undercurrent of sounds).
