Philadelphia:bridge out! by moocatmoocat

Philadelphia:bridge out!

Taken from the Schuylkill River Boat tour. The South Street Bridge is being rebuilt, hence the construction equipment and piers. The Philadelphia Center City skyline is in the background.

Philadelphia Museum of Art from West River Drive by moocatmoocat

Philadelphia Museum of Art from West River Drive

Designed as a vast Neoclassical temple with wings embracing an open court, the Museum's two outlying pavilions were constructed first in order to ensure a continued flow of city funds to complete the connecting central structure. The Museum's design echoes the simpler Neoclassicism of the little group of buildings by the Schuylkill River to the northwest, which were built in the 1820s to house the city's waterworks. www.philamuseum.org/information/45-224-20.html

Spectacled langurs, Philadelphia Zoo

These animals are leaf eaters (also called leaf monkey). They have a specialized complex stomach (partially divided) for digesting these hard to digest foods (cellulose). Since they have ample food in the wild, they do not have cheek pouches like other primates. Because of the low nutritional content of their diet, they are not as active as other monkeys (they must take time to digest their food!). They feed primarily in the morning and late afternoon. Spectacled langurs are diurnal, mostly arboreal, and very territorial. They brachiate when in trees and quadrupedal when on the ground. They live in groups of up to 35 (20-35 average) females, with a young dominant male as leader. They have a low level of aggression and communicate with loud calls. The dominant males also help to keep the troop separate from other troops. Their vision is stereoscopic and excellent, and their hearing is also good.
