NightSchool

NightSchool by MontanaRaven.
And a part, just a little part of a poem by one of my very favorite poets, Mary Oliver ... to accompany this dream image. This is the last bit of her poem, Dogfish:

. . .

Mostly, I want to be kind.
And nobody, of course, is kind,
or mean,
for a simple reason.

And nobody gets out of it, having to
swim through the fires to stay in
this world.

And look! look! look! I think those little fish
better wake up and dash themselves away
from the hopeless future that is
bulging toward them.

And probably,
if they don't waste time
looking for an easier world,

they can do it.

Maureen, this is just wonderful. I am often left kinda cold by some of this type of manipulation but it is wonderfully conceived, realized and even has some quirky tongue in cheek!

I do think, however, it needs a frame to give some whitespace around it then a border of something like red(16) green(48) blue(128) around it - that goes for the trees image as well. The normal flickr display just doesn't do it justice.

thanks for doing that, David. Personally, I'm not into framing my photos that way. To me, it calls too much attention to the actual borders of the image. I guess sometimes that's what I would want -- the effect I would want, to focus on the edges and borders and where the image is not, but usually I don't want to make a big deal of the borders. When I frame my prints, I give them lots of room -- large mats and large frames. But everyone has their own taste :>)

I agree - I don't normally frame my pics. However, this one just wanted some breathing room. I have the "on black" and "on white" bookmarklets on my browser and even with using them it doesn't do the picture justice. The border creates some "implied space" that liberates it - I don't really see the border itself, if anything my focus is more into the centre of the picture. However, we all exercise different aesthetics and that is what makes the world go 'round!

You have made me want to go home and start doing some layer experiments...

@aracay, If only my images could capture half the beauty of nature that her poetry does .... yes, I agree with you there! I would say the same thing about my images and her poetry. Nature is always better in person, imho.

A friend pointed me at your flickr website, and we both think your photos are absolutely beautiful. I particularly love the blue fish (and prefer it without any framing). My friend says ... 'I think they are beautiful and very dream like. She is an artist ... If you have the time to look at her other work you can almost feel you have met her. A lovely soul. Enjoy. Watch the set as a slide show and dream.' I agree - and maybe we'll all visit your site as a group!

Hi MontanaRaven - I don't think I'm part of any group at the moment... I've just started using Flickr and don't really know my way around yet. My friend (the one who told me about your work) and I did a psychotherapy and healing training together and I'm now getting back to my artwork - which is mainly painting but also working with light. Thanks for the lovely comments about my photo.
