Autumn in Astoria

Autumn in Astoria by Harris Graber.
This photo is from a walk home. There was no way of ignoring this tree. It stood out from all the rest. There is no processing here. This is straight from the camera.

This is on 31st Avenue near 29th Street in Astoria.

@jenchung: Thanks!

This tree was asking to be photographed. I could see it a couple of blocks away.

@see.wolf: It's always exciting to find one of my photos on Gothamist. It's one of my favorite and most visited sites.

This was not a great day and finding this photo on Gothamist truly brought me some much needed good cheer.

@beautifulcataya: Thanks!

Part of the look is thanks to the camera which has the equivalent of a 24 mm lens and part is due to shooting up at the backlit leaves. That's the smallest part, though. Almost all of the credit must go to nature for providing the tree.

@theman77777: This was taken last Sunday. I walked from 30th Road to Broadway. That would mean that it could be on Crescent Street (I don't think so), 29th Street, or 30th Street. That's about all I can recall.

I'm going to walk down to Broadway today to see if I can find the exact location.

**edit: The tree is in front of 29-07 31st Avenue, just east of 29th Street. It's lost quite a few leaves this week, but it's still highly noticeable from 31st Street.

I'm glad you asked, by the way, because I really couldn't remember where it was. Your question motivated me to find the location.

@Fenrae: Astoria is quite different from where I lived for the past four decades. I used to live in Manhattan's Upper West Side. Astoria, still part of NYC and not far from where I used to live, is completely different. The pace is slower. It's not as crowded. It's quite culturally diverse. I like it.

@tessapple: Much of the credit has to go to the tree.

You can see why I always carry a camera with me; just to be able to capture sights like this.

I just took a few pics, you're right, the leaves are quickly falling off. Still very cool though. I just posted them.

@theman77777: I'm glad there were still leaves on the tree for you. It's quite a tree.

@acalichica07: It's a beautiful tree. I'll have to remember this for next fall, too, and catch it in its full glory.

@CitizenJane190: Thank you!

I used to live across the street from one of New York City's great parks, Riverside Park. Autumn was wonderful there.

Now, I don't have a park nearby, but there are trees lining many of the streets. People also plant wonderful gardens in front of their houses.

My walk home is always a delight, except, perhaps, in winter.
