imaginary calculation

and now for something completely different!

this is the result of the imaginary part of a calculation which went a bit wrong scientifically, but looks grand artistically. i'm going to try and incorporate it in some artwork soon.

:-) What kind of calculation was it?

oh, just a bit of quantum mechanics... trying to calculate photoelectron partial waves for an ionization event. the real part looked ok, nice and smooth with cylindrical symmetry. this part looks much better, just a bit too imaginary - not very useful for the day job!

Oh, just a bit of Quantum Mechanics, I see. Heh.

What do you do? I'm a science groupie. I want to know. :-)

ah, excellent, i knew i'd find some science groupies eventually, everyone else thinks it's all just geekery.

i am, on a good day, a physical chemist/physicist. on a bad day... well, we won't talk about that.

i do laser photoelectron spectroscopy with a fairly even split between experimental and theoretical work. it basically involves firing laser beams at stuff, seeing what happens, then using that information to tell you about the internal structure of the stuff. in our group the stuff is usually a small molecule (NH3, C2H2) or benzene-derivative in the gas phase.

      Nice. Interesting work you do.
My older sister is doing something similar (similar to my eyes, heh). I think it's called calculating decomposition of charge biomolecules.

Oh, and hey, if you're a science geek, maybe you enjoy this webcomic:
