one of those days

one of those days by monkeyc.net.
The first attempt at a self portrait. My wifes urging - she thinks I take photographs of everything but me. She's right, even though she herself wont pose for me.

The effect i was going for was that tired, end of the day had enough feeling, washed out and worn out.

Shot with low lamplight light from behind to both sides, white wall at ISO1600, converted with a negative blue filter for infrared and then a slight sepia tone to highlight the fact and skin tones. 3 Image triptych

I like the way it worked but I honestly cannot say why I do - it turned out the way I envisioned.

The grain is intentional BTW - thats part of what I was aiming for, that gritty tired feeling like you have just had too much.

Thoughts? Should I keep doing it? Keep trying? Does it work.

Be warned - the full size image is big... 1.3mb -2500x1011 pixels - i think thats the best way to view it myself. first in a planned series of different portraits

You look like you've been dealing with incompetents all day.

The partial obscuring of the face is effective.

It's for me a new approach of photography. I prefer it to the narcisist that spend their time photographing themselves.

I thought that technically a tryptich was a single picture split into three but in any case this is way cool.
Your choice of lighting, filter, grain etc works really well.

like the idea, nicely executed, not so keen on the middle image, the arm is too dominant and hides the face too much imho...you do give the feeling of what you were after in the other 2 images, this would also be worth considering in low light and b/w...

Like it. Good emotion and like the symmetry - threes are always good. I like the white shirt and background too - draws attention to the face/s.

Very grainy. Not enough emotion on your face (try acting classes :) and it looks like you're advertising your watch: ie its too prominent and constant. Good first attempt at self-portrait

I really like what your trying for here, however the poses look forced to me. The way the hand interacts witht he face just doesn't feel natural to me, except maybee in the last one, which i feel is the strongest. Very cool expereiment though.

Guys please note that the grain IS deliberate. I know its grainy, its meant to be. As for the hand, well.. I hate having my photo taken so perhaps its a safety thing.. Not sure :)

I agree with some of the others that this doesn't get much emotion across to me. I like the composition and the sepia-tone though.

well it probably is a bit posed, I dont normally do this stuff so natural poses are likely harder to come by - Thanks guys, its a first attempt and im thrilled with all the feedback you have given me.

PS my haird generally looks ordered - its normally very short :)

Thanks again, you have given me new ideas - you are all wonderful !

Nicely done. My only suggestion for improvement would be to lose the white frame between the images. Its too white. The slightly off-white of your shirt and the background is well balanced with the skin tone.

The body language tells the feeling.
Not totally agree with @Flynnwynn: Yap the frame is too white, but the frame there also let the photo have an interesting point of 3-steps watching. Maybe adjust the frame color would help.

Very Cool. And I like the concept. I've done a similar triptych, only its for one of those mornings, where you just don't want to face the day. When you have that washed out feeling, before you even get out of bed.
