The exhibition RECORDAR ES VIVIR will remain on view every day until the end of December 2011 during lunch and dinner hours in restaurant Primas (Landhuis Vredenberg, Bramendiweg 200, Curacao)

PRESS RELEASE:

Photo exhibition Recordar es vivir by Monique Harbers opens November 18th 2011

Strolling through Otrobanda or on her way to Banda Abou, photographer Monique Harbers stumbles upon beautiful weather-beaten houses including old mansions, deserted buildings of which only the front remains or that have been taken over by nature, such as trees that are growing into the premises, cactuses that seem to have sprung up spontaneously in the gutter and shutters that are dangling in the trade wind, barely attached to only a single hook.

Due to the constructions’ dilapidated state, all of their colorful layers of paint become visible once more. This gives rise to remarkable color combinations, creating a splendid tableau.

Harbers wonders who once lived there, what the building may have looked like originally, and then envisions the memories of its former inhabitants: recordar es vivir (remembering is living).

Remarkable places like these are in abundance in Curacao and she feels inspired to capture them with her camera in the most authentic way.

The photographer hopes that visitors to this exhibition will recognize elements or may even remember from days past what Otrobanda and Banda Abou used to look like, by spotlighting interesting details of monuments.

The power of recollection is that things continue to live on. Whatever it concerns, the beauty of remembering is in reliving those moments of the past or thinking that you remember how things used to be.

‘Recordar es Vivir’ is Harbers’ fourth solo exhibition as a photographer, which will mainly show nostalgic run-down buildings as well as renovated mansions and some landscapes. Her third exhibition was staged this September during the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival in the artists’ lounge and VIP room. Previous exhibitions were held in November 2010 and May 2011.
