Yes, made by European settler men. This would have all been forest not so very long ago. Now what is not National Park is mostly dairy farming. It makes for a spectacular view.

reminds me a little of Mt. Osorno in Chile, also in a preserve. The green ring & the symmetry of the mountain.

Actually, now that I see it again--it's like a little Mt. Shasta with Shastina.

Cool image - from the angle, Fantham's Peak (the bit jutting towards the plane in this shot) you would have been over South Taranaki, the town in the lower right would be Stratford and in the top-right corner by the coast, I think that's a glimpse of New Plymouth.
