New Camera day 26 - Georges adventures in Aperture land

I want one too
New Camera day 26 - Georges adventures in Aperture land by Mojo....
Today George is here to tell you about Aperture. You might not think there is much difference in these pictures of George enjoying his Bloody Mary - but look closer.... George explains "As the aperture number gets bigger, the depth of field also gets bigger & more of the background is in focus." "What's happening?" He hears you all chorus. "Well, the smaller the aperture number, the larger the hole letting in light into your camera. It's a bit like Ikea opening it's doors on a Sunday morning with no queue - it's quick, a bit of a mess when everyone rushes in, in a blur (so you get a blurred background)." "Conversely, the larger the aperture number, the smaller the hole - a bit like a nice orderly single file queue at the bank - very precise, but a bit slow. Everyone gets served, but it takes time (so you get everything in focus)" "Hope that helps? Ta da for now!" Says George Just continuing carrying out a couple of exercises from my Bryan Peterson book. Here I set the camera on manual, opened the aperture to its smallest (f 36) & selected the shutter speed to get the right exposure. I then worked my way down through apertures, slowing them down by a stop each time & selecting the appropriate shutterspeed. It's a good lesson in why manual can be best.

Thanks Gabi!

Richard did point out that I missed out on a comedy opportunity & should've had the bloody mary level going down as the blur increased - darn! :-D

ah... glad you asked, I was saving that as extension work for the gifted & talented pupils! It's because really the aperture is a fraction so f/2 is really 1/2 and f/36 is really 1/36 and obviously a half is bigger than a thirty-sixth. If you need to know more then you'll have to do some very complicated maths which Mr Ang & Mr Peterson will help you with.

thanks Toot!

He's quite clever, he still has a lot to learn though. He has some reading to do before tomorrows lesson, so you'll have to wait & see what he thinks of :-)

oh please do!! I need to borrow some amusing objects from your flat for the next few lessons :-)

Jon - those groups are for the very pedantic grammar police (should I have had a comma in that sentence?). Next you'll be directing me to this group, it's for the bokeh police.

You're funny pictures and simple 'instructions' are really helpful and educational to a beginer photographer like me. Unfortunately I can't control the aperture in my point-and-shoot camera, but at least I know what it means for the future!
Keep up the good work.
