young devils

young devils

A more detailed description of this mad and wonderful experience will come... soon, I hope.

During a school project week last year, I went with a group of students to a little village called Rey Curré, where we witnessed the festival of the diabolitos -- the little devils. It is a fascinating depiction of the struggle between a small indigenous group and the forces it has faced, and still faces...

During three days, men dress up in insane masks and burlap cloth, and chase a bull. The bull represents the Spaniards, but the symbolism of the bull today also includes a number of more modern threats to the indigenous lifestyle.

Proud father and grandmother

Proud father and grandmother

Before she got to know me, Bakata (the lovely two-year old in this photo) was seriously hesitant to smile to the big plastic thing I put in front of my face. We became friends within short, however. Proud dad and grandmother are amused at her caution...

I just really love this shot, as it reflects the calm and relaxed atmosphere that generally ruled in the camp. The teapot with sweet, strong tea... The cloth pulled all the way down in the back to keep out the sandy winds...

In the back, you can see the plastic jugs that we would take 35 kilometers away to fill with water... that was the closest water source.
