As you can see these are dummies -- scarecrows -- perched on top of a mountain that abuts the borders of Lebanon and Syria.

But there is no shortage of real people with real guns here. I see someone with an M-16 almost everyday. The guns aren't always loaded, but the soldiers do carry a clip.

Groups of young Jewish tourists -- many of them uploaded from North America courtesy of the Bronfman family, who own Universal and made their money from Seagram's -- are brought here to experience Israel, and guarded by reservists (albeit the guards seem to carry older rifles and not those big black ones favored by those in active service.)

As you probably know, most Israelis are required to serve in the military -- different than in the US, where we tend to entice the poor to defend the country and fight our wars.

This makes for a youthful army. Many of them wear their trousers as low-slung as an Eminem fan. You'll see them hitch-hiking, wearing iPods.

And the proliferation of hot chicks in camo gave me a whole new appreciation for the "women in uniform" fetish.

Thanks for sharing with Creative Commons. I used this with a commentary on how an environmental conservation area in the Golan could be part of the larger regional peace process.
