Work is well underway on the $321 million renovation and retrofit of UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium. The stadium, which hosted its first football game in 1923, is situated directly on top of an active earthquake fault, necessitating a major seismic upgrade. The stadium will also be modernized during this construction, and seating capacity will be reduced from about 72,000 to about 63,000. The project is scheduled to be completed for the 2012 football season.
